FAQs About Lintels & Shelf Angles

Q: What’s the difference between a lintel bar and a shelf angle?

A: Lintel bars span openings like windows and doors to support brickwork above. Lintel bar has a over hang 100mm each side up to two metres, two metres and above have two hundred millimeters each side. Shelf angles support brick veneer by being attached to the frame and bolted on. Lintel bar transfers weight onto the foundation through the brick, where a shelve angle puts the weight onto the frame.

Q: Can I use a shelf angle with timber framing?

A: Shelf angles require specific engineering design (SED) when used with timber framing due to differential movement between materials.

Q: Do I need custom lintel sizes for wider openings?

A: Yes. Wider spans may require engineered lintels or custom-cut bars. Contact Southtile for sizing support.

Q: Are your lintels compliant with NZ standards?

A: Absolutely. All lintel bars and shelf angles meet NZS 3604 and relevant structural codes.
