FAQs About Firebricks & Refractory Materials
Q: What’s the difference between firebricks and ordinary bricks?
A: Firebricks are made primarily of clay high in silica giving the light Yellow -Brown colour. Fire Bricks can handle higher temperatures. Standard bricks have a higher iron content which gives the Red and Brown colours. Standard bricks are used in pizza ovens and similar applications, but they will deteriorate a lot faster because of the heat.
Q: What is castable refractory and when should I use it?
A: Castable refractory is a dry mix that’s combined with water and poured into molds. It’s ideal for complex shapes or lining areas where bricks won’t fit.
Q: Do firebricks crack over time?
A: All firebricks can crack with use, especially under thermal stress. Hard bricks are more durable, while soft bricks heat faster but may be more prone to cracking.
Q: What temperature can firebricks handle?
A: Most firebricks safely withstand up to 1,350°C, depending on their composition and density.
